- Sponsor of the Protect the Women and Girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo initiative, which aims to prevent and respond to acts of rape and sexual violence in the DRC.
Crowley on Sudan:
- Rep. Crowley has consistently taken steps towards ending the genocide in Darfur and continues to be a champion of the cause.
- Sponsored and fought to pass the Darfur Accountability and Divestment Act, which prohibited U.S. government contracts with companies fueling the genocide, and authorized states to also prohibit contracts with these problematic companies.
- Sponsored and fought to pass the China resolution on Darfur which calls on the government of the People’s Republic of China to use its unique influence and economic leverage to stop genocide and violence in Darfur.
- Lead sponsor in providing the Darfur peacekeepers from the African Union and the United Nations with essential and necessary equipment to help stem the violence and carry out its mandate of protecting civilians.
- Wrote letters to Prime Minister Abdullah of Malaysia and Prime Minister Singh of India, asking that they reassess their own relationship with the government of Sudan given the escalating violence and 4-year conflict that has taken over 400,000 lives and displaced an estimated 2.5 million people in Darfur itself.
- Wrote a letter to President Mubarak of Egypt expressing concern over the manner in which Sudanese refugees had been treated by the Egyptian border crossing guards.
- Insisted that President Bush and his administration create a comprehensive U.S. policy for Sudan and the surrounding region by designating a leader within the Administration to articulate a clear strategy, placing an adequately staffed, full-time diplomatic team in the region, and encouraging allies to provide needed logistics to the UN Peacekeeping Force.
Crowley on Zimbabwe:
- Rep. Crowley commended the efforts of those who sought to block a Chinese arms shipment to Zimbabwe and called for an international arms embargo against the dictatorial regime of Robert Mugabe.
- Sponsored legislation condemning the decision by the Government of Zimbabwe to hold the runoff presidential election on June 27, 2008 and supported enhancing political, diplomatic, and economic sanctions against the Government of Robert Mugabe.
- Condemned the post-election violence and called for a peaceful resolution to the political crisis following the June 27th runoff election.
Crowley Protecting Women’s Rights:
- Expressed concern to Attorney General Michael Mukasey over the retreat in protecting women who are fleeing severe human rights abuses in their countries, specifically women being subjected to female genital mutilation.
- Called on President Bush and the international community to take immediate steps to respond to and prevent acts of rape and sexual violence against women and girls in Darfur, Sudan, and eastern Chad and the Central African Republic.
