Creating Responsible Energy Policy

"America deserves a comprehensive energy plan for the 21st century. The goals of a responsible energy policy should be to reduce dependence on dangerous and finite sources of energy, protect and enhance our nation's security and economy, and harness domestic technologies that can create jobs while delivering clean, reliable energy to consumers"

    Combating High Gas Prices
  • Introduced legislation to provide a $500 tax credit for Americans to help defray the cost of gasoline, and another $500 tax credit to help make home heating oil and other fuels more affordable when heating their home in the winter.

  • Called for creation of a National Gasoline and Energy Security Commission to review U.S. gas and energy policy, investigate any cases of price gouging and the future energy needs and production capability.

  • Supports a windfall profits tax on oil companies, part of which would be used to bring some relief to consumers, while the other part would be reinvested part in long-term solutions to ease our dependency on oil.

  • Lowering our Dependence on Gasoline
  • Supporter of legislation to require the Federal Department of Transportation to raise fuel economy standards (CAFE standards) for automobiles from today's average of 25 miles per gallon.

  • Advocating new Federal private-public partnerships to advance cleaner, more efficient cars and trucks.

  • Investing in Safe, Clean Technologies
  • Supports investments in renewable energy sources, such as ethanol, wind, and solar power.

  • Supports clean energy sources, not drilling or mining for more polluting resources.

  • Opposes drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and off our coasts.

  • Compiled a report on the safety issues at nuclear power plants and how to protect our communities.

  • Queens Blackout
  • Continues to press for investigation of ConEdison's failures during the week-long blackout to identify what went wrong and ensure it doesn't happen again.

  • Worked to simplify ConEd's reimbursement process for spoiled food, and to include medications as reimbursable items.

  • Called on state and Federal officials to provide disaster assistance to affected areas of Queens.
