Congressman Crowley on Israel
Congressman
Representing parts of the city with the largest Jewish community in the world, Congressman Joseph Crowley has been a consistent advocate for the State of Israel throughout his twenty-year career in public service. He has visited Israel a total of five times, including helping to lead the largest delegation of Members of Congress in history to Israel in the summer of 2003.
In Washington, Congressman Crowley serves on the Committee on International Relations. The International Relations Committee provides Congressman Crowley with a forum to represent the views of one of the most diverse and multi-ethnic constituencies in the country on issues of international importance to the United States. He serves on the Middle East and Central Asia Subcommittee, where he is proud of his 100% record in support of the State of Israel.
Supporting the State of Israel
- Congressman Crowley has used his role on the International Relations Committee to include language in the State Department authorization directing the State Department to ensure that all U.S. embassies work to ensure their host country provides full diplomatic recognition to Israel.
- Authored successful legislation calling upon Israel's full acceptance at the United Nations, as well as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and all multi-lateral forums.
- As a Member of the International Relations Committee, Congressman Crowley supported legislation, which he managed on the House floor, opposing the Unilateral Declaration of a Palestinian State, as well as support for IsraelŐs decision to build a security barrier to protect Israelis and the bold move of Prime Minister Sharon in implementing the Disengagement Plan.
- Congressman Crowley is the author of successful legislation calling upon Hizbollah to allow the International Red Cross to visit Israeli POWs currently being held in Lebanon.
Working to Ensure Peace in the Middle East
- Congressman Crowley authored a letter with almost 200 of his colleagues, urging President Bush to make Iran's nuclear weapons program an issue at the G-8 Summit, which the President did.
- Strongly supported referring Iran's nuclear weapons program to the United Nations Security Council and has used his friendship with other countries to urge them to support referring Iran to the Security Council.
Financial Services
- In addition to serving on the Committee on International Relations, Congressman Crowley also serves on the powerful Committee on Financial Services, where he has been active on issues directly affecting Israel and her citizens.
- Congressman Crowley has urged the government of Poland to provide restitution to former Polish citizens from World War II.
- Supports legislation which limits life insurance coverage for Americans who live and travel to Israel.
- Congressman Crowley has helped crack down on the Arab Bank's money laundering and terrorist support activity.
Fighting Anti-Semitism
- Congressman Crowley introduced legislation condemning the governments of France, Germany, Belgium and other European countries for anti-Semitism and calling upon all governments of Europe to do more to foster an atmosphere of tolerance in their countries, which passed the House of Representatives.
Democratic Israel Working Group
- Congressman Crowley is a founding member of the Democratic Israel Working Group, a forum for Democratic Members of Congress to support the Jewish state.
