Fighting for Women and Girls Around the World

"I am a strong advocate of equality for all women, and I believe we must do everything in our power to guarantee that opportunities exist for the success of every woman and every girl. We also can no longer ignore the unique needs of women's health care. Our mothers, wives and daughters deserve better --- and I hope to provide them with some remedy."

Working to Eliminate the Global Pandemic and Increase Respect for Girls and Women
  • Wrote the law that mandates funding for education programs to require that the teaching of programs to combat HIV/AIDS should involve a curriculum targeted to men and boys emphasizing gender equality and respect for women and girls.

  • Working for Women's Reproductive and Preventive Health
  • Congressman Crowley is the led House sponsor for increased funding for Title X women's health and family planning assistance. Title X provides high-quality family planning services and other preventive health care -- including breast cancer screenings, health education, prenatal and postnatal care, HIV screenings, social services referral, contraceptive supplies and information, natural family planning, and screening for anemia, diabetes and high blood pressure -- to low-income individuals who would otherwise lack access to health care.

  • Led the Fight in Congress for Funding of Global Population Activities
  • Congressman Crowley led the fight in Congress for full funding of the United Nations Family Planning Assistance program (UNFPA), which works in more than 150 countries to provide voluntary family planning and other critical health care services, including prenatal, safe delivery and post-natal care, as well as treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
  • UNFPA also works to eliminate harmful practices such as female genital mutilation, and allows women and men to voluntarily plan and space their families, to deliver healthy babies in safe and sterile conditions, and to protect and promote their health.

  • Protecting Battered Women in New York City
  • Congressman Crowley was a leader in helping Elmcor Youth and Adult Activities in Queens secure the Federal funds to open and operate a shelter for women and their children.

  • Working for Early Detection of Breast Cancer
  • Congressman Crowley secured $250,000 for Elmhurst Hospital for a digital mammography unit to provide better preventive care services to their patients.
