Morris
Park
Morris Park is a neighborhood in the east central Bronx, bounded
by Pelham Parkway, Parkchester, and Van Nest. From 1890 to 1913
the area was the site of Morris Park Racetrack, an elegant facility
built by the businessman and horse fancier John A. Morris; there
the Belmont Stakes was run until 1905 and an air show was held
in 1908. After a fire destroyed the track in 1910 streets were
cut through and 3019 lots were auctioned off. The neighborhood
consists of small one-family houses and two- and three-story apartment
buildings. Morris Park Avenue is the principal commercial thoroughfare
and Italians form the largest ethnic group.
