Apply to a Military Service Academy
Application Guidelines
Applicants requesting a nomination from my office must be:
- At least 17 years of age but not yet 23 years of age;
- A United States citizen
- Unmarried with no legal obligation to support a child or a dependent;
- A legal resident of the 7th Congressional District.
All materials must be submitted as a complete packet postmarked by October 30th of the year prior to admission. A completed application consists of the following:
- An application form;
- Three letters of recommendation;
- An official transcript including high school junior year course work, grade point average, and class rank;
- SAT or ACT scores. These may be sent directly to my office by filling in code 5680 on the score release form;
- Results from a qualified medical examination. This will be scheduled by the service academy through the Department of defense Medical Review Board upon receiving your pre-candidate questionnaire.
Basis for Nomination
My office will review the following criteria to determine whether a candidate will be awarded a nomination:
- School record, including both grade point average and class rank. The average competitive candidate is in the upper fifth of his/her class.
- Involvement in extra-curricular activities such as athletics, community service, and school-based organizations.
- SAT scores. A competitive candidate must score at least 560 on the verbal section and at least 600 on the math section of the SAT I exam. Applicants are encouraged to retake the exam if their scores are not at this level.
- Motivation.
- Required interview with my Service Academy Selection Board.
- Additional application requirements specific to the particular service academy to which the candidate is applying.
