Press Release

(Queens, N.Y.) – Today, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) introduced A Better Deal for Queens and the Bronx - a collection of concrete legislative and advocacy efforts to improve life for New Yorkers.

The Better Deal for Queens and the Bronx includes real and tangible improvements to make it easier for students to learn in modern classrooms and for parents to make the best choices for their families about child care and their careers. It will help commuters get to work on time and grow in their jobs. It also includes legislative and advocacy efforts to create a more just criminal justice system, improve New York City’s infrastructure, and help seniors retire with dignity.

“It’s always been my belief that Americans do best when their communities are secure, strong, and filled with opportunity. When families feel as if they have the chance to get ahead through hard work and a level playing field,” said Congressman Crowley. “Democrats are fighting for true progress for the men and women who built this country and contribute most to our economy and communities – and that’s what my Better Deal for Queens and the Bronx will help accomplish.”

“Congressman Crowley has a strong history of supporting education because he understands that it has the power to change lives,” said Dr. Sharon DeVivo, President of Vaughn College. “His vision for helping low-income families afford college, assisting veterans in securing housing while attending school, and inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math is the leadership we need to be successful as a district, a city, and a nation. We are proud to partner with him, as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, serving predominantly low-income, first-generation college students and offering in-demand degrees in STEM, to respond to the needs of this community and a rapidly changing world.”

“Simply put, the Better Deal agenda for the Bronx is a common-sense approach to many of our concerns at Bronx Community Board #10,” said Matthew Cruz, District Manager, Bronx Community Board #10. “Investments such as bringing the Metro North to areas in the East Bronx goes a long way toward improving the quality-of-life our constituents deserve. We thank Congressman Crowley for once again leading the way.”

“More jobs! Better jobs! Quality Jobs! Higher Salaries!  Who wouldn’t support this? Congressman Crowley hit the nail on the head. I fully support this plan. It will secure good-paying jobs and help individuals acquire the skills necessary to thrive in this ever-changing economy and provide a better way of life for the local communities,” said Angel Pineiro Jr., Senior Vice President, Agilant Solutions, Inc.

The plan details actions in ten categories that will improve the long-term and day-to-day lives of Queens and Bronx residents. These categories include jobs, education, housing, homelessness, immigration, the justice system, seniors, veterans, infrastructure, and transportation.
