Chairman Crowley Statement on Defeat of a Republican Anti-Muslim Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act
(Washington, DC) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) issued the following statement after Democrats largely provided the votes to defeat an amendment from Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) calling for an unconstitutional study by the Department of Defense to review the preachings of Islamic leaders and "Islamic religious doctrines, concepts or schools of thought" that could unfairly target Muslims:
"This proposal was at odds with the rights and freedoms promised by our Constitution with respect to religion. It was misguided, and would have alienated the millions of Muslim Americans who love their country and reflect its values.
"Proposing that our military expend resources studying Islam would not make Americans safer at home or abroad. We need to focus on real proposals that will enhance our national security - not fear-mongering tactics that would alienate our fellow Americans. I'm proud that House Democrats rejected this amendment, and I hope more Republicans will speak out against this idea."
