Congressman Crowley Celebrates the New Year with New York’s Korean-American Community
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) joined the New York Korean-American community for a New Year’s celebration hosted by the National Unification Advisory Council on Monday, January 10, 2011. During the celebration, Congressman Crowley acknowledged the Korean-American community’s vocal support for measures such as the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, immigration reform and strong support for South Korea. In addition, Crowley highlighted the need to maintain strong ties between the U.S. and Korea and recognized the service of New York’s Korean War veterans.
“I am honored to ring in the New Year with leaders and members of the Korean-American community in New York,” said Congressman Crowley. “The Korean-American community has made many positive contributions to America and our society and culture, particularly here in New York, are richer because of it. I look forward to working hand-in-hand with leaders of the Korean-American community on the many important issues facing the community as well as efforts to further strengthen the ties between our nations.”
Crowley stressed the importance of passing responsible and comprehensive immigration reform in the Congress and highlighted the benefits of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, a measure that is expected to come up for congressional consideration in the coming months. The Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement will help create economic growth, while leveling the playing field for U.S. businesses to remain competitive in the global economy. The Agreement will also strengthen a critical partnership between the U.S. and South Korea.
“South Korea is not just a friend, but an indispensable U.S. ally and the Korea-U.S. Free Trade agreement will further cement our strategic relationship,” said Crowley. “By opening the door for U.S. businesses to access the growing markets in Korea, this agreement will fuel growth in a number of sectors and will benefit businesses right here in New York.”
Queens is home to a vibrant and active Korean-American community.
Congressman Crowley is the seven-term representative from the 7th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
