Queens Student Accepts Appointment to Prestigious Service Academy

(Queens, NY)  – Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, announced the appointment of Corona resident, Flor Landi, to the highly competitive United States Naval Academy. Crowley nominated Landi in January and recently welcomed her to his district office to congratulate her on her acceptance.

“It gives me great pleasure to know that one of our borough’s best and brightest young leaders is on her way to the United States Naval Academy to serve our country,” said Rep. Crowley. “Flor has demonstrated an incredible commitment to everything she does, while challenging herself every step of the way. She is someone who strongly believes in giving back to our community and I have no doubt Flor will continue to make her family and our nation proud.”

As a student at Aviation High School, Flor graduated in the top seven percent of her class and has been the recipient of numerous distinctions such as the United States Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award and the Women in Aviation Award. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, the Pegasus Society, the Science Leadership Society, and the school’s FIRST Robotics team.

As a member of Congress, Crowley has the privilege of nominating a limited number of residents of New York’s 14th Congressional District to four of the five service academies each year. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. Appointments to service academies are highly competitive, with emphasis placed on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, physical aptitude, character and motivation. Crowley’s application period opens May 15th of each year for those candidates who are high school juniors and will be seniors the following school year, or who have already graduated.

Congressman Crowley is the eight-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and serves as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives.
