May 10, 2011 Issues:

Washington, D.C.Today, Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), a chief deputy whip in the Democratic leadership of the House of Representatives, issued the following statement welcoming President Obama’s speech on comprehensive immigration reform:

“I thank President Obama for continuing the dialogue on comprehensive immigration reform – an urgent and critical issue facing our entire country.

“Comprehensive immigration reform is more than a national security issue or moral imperative – it is an economic necessity.

“As the son and grandson of Irish immigrants, I was moved by the President’s remarks about the diversity of America’s immigrant heritage. We are a nation of immigrants – a fact that unites us all.

“I am proud to be a leader in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform and will continue to press for efforts like the DREAM Act that will move our country in the right direction toward improving our immigration system. It is my hope that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will recognize the urgent need for reform and will join me in passing comprehensive reform as soon as possible.”

Congressman Crowley is a seven-term representative from the 7th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He serves as chief deputy whip in the Democratic leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives and is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee
