Crowley Leads House Colleagues in Honoring Victims of Hurricane Sandy
Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), joined his colleagues from states affected by Hurricane Sandy in honoring the victims of the devastating storm on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Following remarks by Crowley and Rep. Bob Turner (R-NY), the House held a moment of silence.
Below are Crowley’s remarks as prepared for delivery. Click here to watch.
“Mr. Speaker I ask to speak out of order for two minutes.
“Thank you Mr. Speaker and thank you to my colleague from New York.
“The bipartisan support in organizing this moment demonstrates how we as a country should come together in times of crisis.
“Sandy was utterly devastating – not only to property and homes, but to families and entire neighborhoods.
“Our hearts are with those in places like City Island, Edgewater, and Locust Point in the Bronx, the Rockaways and Breezy Point where our colleague Bob Turner lost his home in Queens, Lower Manhattan, Staten Island, Hoboken and coastal New Jersey and Fairfield County Connecticut.
“For many, recovery has already begun, as they work to piece together their lives and their communities.
“For others, the rebuilding has not yet begun as they still wait more than two weeks for power, fuel and more.
“And for far too many, we grieve at the ultimate loss – precious men, women and children who are no longer with us.
“Lastly, we must acknowledge the constant, heartfelt support from all public servants, including all the firefighters, the volunteer fire department, the police department, the National Guard, and the sanitation workers who are clearing away mounds and mounds of sand and debris. All their work is heroic, and we honor them.
“Please join me in keeping all those we lost in your thoughts and your prayers, and remember them in the weeks and months ahead.”
