Press Release

(Queens, N.Y.) – House Democratic Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Department of Justice threatened to subpoena and withhold federal funding from New York City due to its status as a sanctuary city:

“New York has always been and will always be a sanctuary city, and New Yorkers will not be bullied by the Trump administration’s racist, anti-immigrant agenda. Today’s threat from the Department of Justice is nothing but a further assault on our immigrant communities.

“The president campaigned on the promise that he’d keep Americans safe. But stripping federal funding to combat terrorism from New York City will put millions of Americans at risk. These funds help protect our families, police officers, and first responders – citizens the president was elected to serve. It is incomprehensible that the Trump administration is willing to put Americans at risk just to further their mass deportation agenda.”
