Vice Chair Crowley Congratulates Recipients of Fulbright Award
Fulbrighters from Queens Recognized for Successful Completion of Prestigious Program
(Queens, NY) – On Monday December 19, 2016, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, congratulated Queens residents Kate Belin, Shabhia Akter and Lucia Perez on their successful completion of the prestigious and highly competitive Fulbright Program. Crowley presented certificates of congressional recognition to the Fulbrighters, who shared their experiences abroad and spoke about their deep passion for giving back.
“The Fulbright program is a remarkable tradition that provides bright young minds a chance to do creative research while serving communities around the world,” said Rep. Crowley. “We’re incredibly proud of Queens’ own, who traveled the globe in pursuit of a unique opportunity to help others. Fulbright’s long-standing commitment to promoting working relationships between citizens of all nations is a noble goal, and I’m excited to see what these remarkable individuals will achieve next.”
The Fulbright program, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary, is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
Belin, an Astoria resident, spent her time implementing new ways of teaching Algebra at a secondary school in Botswana; Akter, from Woodside, taught English in Sri Lanka; and Perez, a fellow Woodsider, shared her passion for astronomy with young South African students.
In total, four individuals from New York’s 14th Congressional District received the Fulbright grant for the 2015-2016 academic year including Jackson Heights resident Eric Beeker, who worked with Brazilian writers to produce translations of their work.
The merit-based grants are awarded annually in most academic disciplines and fields of study.
Congressman Crowley is the nine-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and serves as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives.
