Crowley and Surgeon General Hold Town Hall with Queens Community, Tour Jackson Heights Neighborhood to Discuss Community Health Needs and the Benefits of a Healthy Lifestyle

(Queens, N.Y.) – On Tuesday, November 1, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, welcomed Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, the 19th United States Surgeon General, for a walking tour and town hall in Jackson Heights, Queens.

“It was an honor to welcome our nation’s top doctor, Dr. Vivek Murthy, to Queens,” said Rep. Crowley. “I’ve known Dr. Murthy as someone who has gone from being a physician to a dedicated public servant, and I greatly appreciate his dedication to improving public health. Particularly as we embark on open season for health coverage, hearing directly from our Surgeon General is a great opportunity for my constituents to learn more about their insurance coverage options, as well as get insight into some of the most pressing health issues facing our nation. I thank the Surgeon General for joining me in these important discussions.”

“I always enjoy going to New York and Jackson Heights holds a particularly important place in my heart, not only because it is one of the most diverse places in America, but because I have fond memories of my parents bringing me here as a child,” said Surgeon General Murthy. “I appreciated the opportunity to walk around Queens with Congressman Crowley and to have the opportunity to remind people that Open Enrollment for quality affordable health insurance through the Affordable Care Act is happening now through January 31, 2017. Twenty million Americans now have health insurance because of the Affordable Care Act and most consumers will be able to find a good health plan for less than $75 per month thanks to financial assistance.”

As part of the visit, Crowley led Dr. Murthy on a tour to explore the diversity of Jackson Heights. During the tour, Crowley and Murthy promoted Open Enrollment – an opportunity for Americans to sign up for affordable health insurance – by visiting a local pharmacy, where Crowley also received a flu shot. The flu vaccine is one of the many covered preventive benefits covered free of charge under the Affordable Care Act – one that will help New Yorkers stay healthy during flu season. Crowley and Murthy also stopped by Patel Brothers supermarket where they discussed the benefits of healthy eating and achieving a healthy lifestyle.

Following the walking tour, Crowley and Murthy joined over 150 members of the community in a town hall, where they discussed a range of health issues and answered questions about Open Enrollment and the Affordable Care Act, opioid abuse, flu season, physical and emotional well-being, and more.

Dr. Murthy was confirmed as the 19th U.S. Surgeon General in 2014. As Surgeon General, Dr. Murthy is responsible for communicating the best available scientific information to the public regarding ways to improve personal and public health. He also oversees the operations of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, comprised of approximately 6,700 uniformed health officers who serve in nearly 800 locations around the world to promote, protect, and advance the health and safety of our nation and our world. Dr. Murthy also serves as a Co-Chair of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, which coordinates the efforts of agencies throughout the federal Government to promote increased access to and participation in federal programs for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who remain underserved.

Congressman Crowley is the nine-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and serves as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives.
